Brief Description of the Department

The Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change is headed by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forest Force (PCCF & HoFF), who serves as the head of the Department. The Department functions through a structured hierarchy comprising wildlife, territorial, research, planning, monitoring, and administrative wings to ensure effective forest governance, biodiversity conservation, and environmental management across the State.

The Department is broadly organized into Territorial, Wildlife, Research & Utilization, Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation, and Headquarters establishments. The territorial administration is supervised by the Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Territorial) through two territorial circles, namely the Northern Territorial Circle (NTC) and Southern Territorial Circle (STC), headed by Conservators of Forests (CFs). These circles oversee various Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs) managing forest divisions across different districts.

The Wildlife Wing functions under the PCCF & Chief Wildlife Warden (CWLW), overseeing wildlife divisions, protected areas, and conservation institutions including Intanki National Park and the Nagaland Zoological Park. Wildlife Divisions located at Dimapur, Kiphire, Doyang, and Mon work towards protection and management of wildlife resources and habitats.

The Department also includes specialized and functional wings under APCCF (Environment & Climate Change) and Conservator of Forests (Research, Planning & Utilization), which supervise institutions such as the State Silviculturist, State Environment & Forestry Training Institute (SEFTI), and Working Plan Division. These units are responsible for forestry research, capacity building, scientific forest management, planning, and climate-related initiatives.

In addition, the Department has dedicated branches for Headquarters administration, Monitoring & Evaluation, and Development & Planning to strengthen policy implementation, coordination, and overall departmental administration. Through its extensive organizational structure, the Department works towards sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, ecological balance, and environmental protection in the State.
